Christi Sobel

Christi SobelI have been Acorn's graphic designer and informal "art director" for the last 10 years, and I am an artist and scientific illustrator in my professional life. Ironically I also have my own line of notecards, and the joke around here is that I'm The Competition.

My mom likes to tell people how I started out making detailed drawings of mushrooms and horses, foreshadowing my future as a scientific illustrator. I grew up in Brooktondale, a small community near Ithaca, and returned to my hometown to live and to build my freelance art and illustration business. In the traveling years between leaving and returning, I gained a degree in art and biology from Eastern College (St. Davids, PA) and a graduate certificate in Scientific Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz, as well as a taste for travel and a great collection of memories of beautiful places. I have also worked at and been published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London), taught art classes in a small village in the Central Plateau of Haiti, painted murals and created illustrations for several fine environmentally-conscious organizations, and generally wandered around looking at things and being artistically useful wherever possible.

I now freelance with a variety of people and projects in illustration and graphic design. I love working with groups such as Acorn Designs that have an environmental mission, and especially love it when my pen is my passport to travel. Some recent clients include Audubon, the Ithaca Sciencenter, ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization), the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies. As you read this, I will be in Thailand working for the International Sustainable Development Studies Institute.

I am also a member of the Ithaca Farmers' Market, where I sell notecards, prints and calendars of my artwork and limited edition intaglio etchings. (These are also available online through my website.) I enjoy painting and printmaking and usually have a few shows a year in local venues.

My work reflects what I find beautiful and interesting in the Creation around us, bringing attention to the details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
