Zinnias

Zinnias are bright annual flowers which are extremely easy to grow and will perk up any garden site with their colorful presence. Preferring hot, dry climates, they will also thrive in cooler, wetter regions. There are many varieties of zinnias, and they are available in all bright colors except for true blue. They also come in a wide range of sizes, from as small as 10 inches tall to as large as 4 feet tall. Zinnias bloom profusely from early summer until frost and will attract many birds and butterflies to your garden!

These cheerful flowers were originally native to Mexico, where the early Spanish explorers called them "mall de ojos." The flowers were small and considered "ugly to the eye." Zinnias were first cultivated in Austria in 1613 and earned their name from an 18th century German botanist, Johann Gottfried Zinn, who wrote the flower's first scientific description. When first introduced to the Europeans, zinnias were dubbed "poor house flower"and "everybody's flower" because they were so easy to grow!

In the language of flowers, zinnias stand for "thoughts of absent friends."
